The Twelve Apostles Hotel

A white Christmas in Cape Town may be more sun-bleached sands and brilliant froth-topped surf than traditional wintry landscapes, but the city’s Christmas markets certainly hold their own against the mulled-wine scented stalls of the northern hemisphere. Stay at The Twelve Apostles to explore the vibrant metropolis’ pop-up festive craft fairs and outdoor fêtes. Shop the cream of Cape Town’s burgeoning artisan scene for one-of-a-kind gifts and gorgeous souvenirs. Here’s our pick of the best Christmas markets in Cape Town.

Blaauwklippen Twilight Christmas Market

One of Stellenbosch’s most esteemed wine estates, Blaauwklippen’s Twilight Christmas Market bristles with festive activities, live bands, Christmas carols and funfair rides. Sample the estate’s impressive portfolio of wines and chew on freshly sliced biltong (spiced, cured meat), designed to be paired with certain grapes. With ponies to ride, friendly goats to pet and alpacas to meet, there’s plenty of entertainment for children, too. Need something a little more substantial than biltong? Greek kebabs, German Flammkuchen and Chinese dumplings are all served fresh up until 9pm.

Lourensford Christmas Market

Twinkling lights strung above bustling al-fresco dining areas set a sparkling scene for the Lourensford Christmas Market. Trade the city for stunning surrounds at the historic Lourensford Wine Estate, nudged up against Helderberg Mountain with exquisite views of its soaring craggy peaks. While the market bristles with ample stalls selling locally crafted gifts, regional preserves, and, of course, wine, the star of the show here is Lourensford’s award-winning gardens, complete with the enchanting Fairy Light Lane.
