To mark the beginning of Breast Cancer Awareness Month this October, Twelve Apostles Hotel and Spa is partnering with the Cancer Association of South Africa (CANSA) and Le Creuset in putting on a special Cuppa for CANSA Pink Tea event. We speak to TV presenter and model Cindy Nell, who will be hosting this occasion, on what the charity means to her.
Tell us about Cuppa for CANSA.
“Cuppa for Cansa is a very successful initiative to raise not only funds but also awareness. Cancer is on the rise, and no-one is too young, old or heathy to escape it. We need to be aware of the signs of cancer, for ourselves, our families, and our friends. Cuppa for cancer gives everyone the opportunity to get involved in raising awareness as well as funds for the development of possible cures, support groups and for helping those who are not able to pay for their own treatment. People can simply have a Cuppa for CANSA event in their own home with friends, or they can organise a fancy get-together at their local hotel. The event is a day to dress up and celebrate one another, and to have tea and cake in celebration of our health and our lives, while contributing to a good cause. It’s a great initiative to be a part of.”
Why did you decide to become involved with CANSA?
“CANSA has been around for 85 years, which makes it not only one of the oldest NGOs in South Africa, but also the oldest cancer organisation in South Africa. In this time CANSA has organised many sustainable projects, and as a result has been awarded the most trusted NGO in Africa, as well as the coolest brand for an NGO. CANSA strives to save lives, act as support for those who have been diagnosed, and fund the development of cures as well as people’s treatment. Cuppa for Cancer is a fun initiative and one of many that I am involved with in trying to make a difference. I really believe that CANSA is making a difference to people’s lives.”
What role have you played in the work CANSA does?
“I act as a spokesperson and voice for CANSA, which increases awareness and in turn helps to raise funds, and ultimately save lives. I try set a good example for others to follow by getting involved in the community and encouraging people to help one another.”
What aspirations do you have for the future of these CANSA initiatives?
“My own goal is to raise more funds to go towards the development of a cancer cure, while also encouraging more women to go for breast cancer check-ups and be aware of the early signs.”
Cuppa for CANSA will take place at the Twelve Apostles Hotel and Spa on 30th September 2016 (3-5pm), from which 50 per cent of all proceeds will be donated to the CANSA charity. At this special Pink Tea event, visitors can listen to the courageous story of cancer survivor Sharol van Nieuwenhuizen, see live music and take part in the Cuppa for CANSA prize draw.
