Globetrotters who are always on the move, dashing back and forth between continents, climates and time zones, need to take special care to look after their skin when travelling. We have asked Joanne de Wet, Spa Manager at The Spa at The Twelve Apostles, to share her skin care travel tips and secrets.

Tip 1 – Prep before travelling

I improve my blood and lymph circulation before travelling by exfoliating my entire body. The Honey Bush and Kigelia Salt Scrub from our B ǀ Africa range is a brilliant product to use for this. Once my skin is prepped I apply the B ǀ Africa Bath Milk all over my body, which hydrates for hours. I always take my 50ml of Lavender and Jasmin Body Balm on the flight, which I apply on my hands, feet and a little to my neck and shoulders. The lavender smell has a soothing effect and helps me sleep. It can be purchased as part of the B ǀ Africa Travel Set, which is perfect for flying.

Tip 2 – Don’t forget your essentials

It is vital to take good care of your skin when travelling, as the combination of change of climate, dry cabin air and lack of sleep can play havoc with it. Which is why, when I board a long flight, I always ensure that I have my essentials on me. These include cleansing wipes, a facial spritz, night moisturiser for better hydration during the flight, and a day moisturiser with SPF. I personally love Elemis as they do a fantastic range of travel sizes, so I can be sure that all bottles and containers are always within the international in-flight regulation of 100ml containers.

Tip 3 – Know the climate of your destination

It is really important to find out what type of climate you will be arriving in. I personally never go anywhere without my daily moisturiser with SPF, so my skin is always protected no matter what climate. I also always pack my super hydrating B ǀ Africa Shampoo and Conditioner, so whether I’m in the freezing cold or the boiling heat my hair will always feel smooth and protected.

Tip 4 – Don’t be scared to try something new

I love trying new beauty products and always check to see what’s out there. I do stick to my basics, such as the B ǀ Africa range for my body and Elemis for my skin, but at the same time it’s fun to find and try new ‘cult classics’ from other parts of the world. So be adventurous and have fun exploring new territories and products!

Tip 5 – Get rid of jet lag

Long haul flights can leave you feeling drained, especially when crossing time zones. Luckily jetlagged travellers arriving in Cape Town can take advantage of our exclusive salt water floatation pool at The Spa at The Twelve Apostles – 20 minutes of this liquid, reduced gravity experience makes up for lost sleep and will leave you feeling relaxed and rejuvenated. This is best followed by one of our full-body massages, during which the therapist will apply the B ǀ Africa Instant Revitalise Gel on your legs and back to get the blood and lymph circulation moving again. Finish your pampering session off with some healthy snacks and one of our herbal teas in the Tranquillity Lounge and you’ll be as good as new!
