Red Carnation Hotel Collection South Africa properties score Diners Club hat-trick

The Bushmans Kloof Wilderness Reserve and Wellness Retreat, The Oyster Box and The Twelve Apostles Hotel and Spa have been recognised with the highest Diners Club Winelist Awards honour, Diamond certification.

The Diners Club Winelist Awards encourage food and wine-serving establishments to improve the standards of the wine selection they offer to their patrons. The award categories and competition requirements are in line with global market trends and Diners Club International’s ongoing contribution towards service excellence in the hospitality and tourism industries.

The 2011 judging panel was chaired by internationally-respected wine convener for Diners Club, Dave Hughes, and included judges such as former WINE magazine editor Fiona McDonald and wine educator Clive Torr. The four judging criteria categories for 2011 were content (35%), balance (30%), presentation (25%) and suitability (10%).

“Besides the big names, we have tried to select our favourites – wines we enjoy, and hope that our variety of guests will enjoy,” says Bushmans Kloof General Manager Graham Kennedy. Located in the pristine Cederberg just 270km from Cape Town, Bushmans Kloof’s stunning natural environs are juxtaposed against the relaxed luxury of the manicured indigenous gardens and 16 freestanding suites.

Recently-appointed Sommelier Gregory Mutambe at TheTwelve Apostles Hotel in Cape Town has refreshed the seaside hotel’s extensive wine tome – with winning results.

The Oyster Box General Manager Wayne Coetzer says he is delighted the Umhlanga hotel’s wine list has been adjudged to be in harmony with the food on its menu.
“The award reveals the care and planning which went into creating our wine list for one South Africa’s best-loved hotels,” he says.

All three wine lists include an extensive range of wines from Bouchard Finlayson, which is also owned by the Tollman family and thus a sister property. Located in the temperate Hemel-en-Aarde Valley, the boutique winery specialises in Pinot noir and is recognised as one of South Africa’s best producers of the varietal.

The Spa at the Twelve Apostles Hotel in Cape Town will relaunch in August with a completely fresh identity and new management.

The Spa’s neutral palette and natural look will be in keeping with the award-winning spas at sister properties The Oyster Box in Umhlanga and Bushmans Kloof Wilderness Reserve and Wellness Retreat in the Cederberg, which are all operated and managed by The Red Carnation Collection as a spa brand.

The new Spa will be dedicated to restoring beauty and balance through individual treatments and Spa journeys, personalised for each guest by skilled therapists using Elemis and Dermalogica products. “Our commitment to wellbeing focuses on holistic principles, combining ancient wisdom with modern expertise,” says Toni Tollman, designer and family member of the award-winning, family owned Red Carnation Hotel Collection of luxury boutique hotels.

Signature treatments

In The Apostles Touch, a back-to-nature journey of profound relaxation will include using stones from Table Mountain for a hot stone foot massage, handpicked fynbos for a back of the body exfoliation and shells from the Atlantic Ocean for a lava shell massage.

In the hedonistic Sunset Mountain Serenade, start with a champagne picnic and exult in the breath-taking views of the ocean and the Twelve Apostles Mountain Range before surrendering to a touch point foot ritual and a 90-minute massage in the shaded mountain gazebos.

Facials, designed to revitalise and regenerate the delicate facial area, are done by highly trained therapists. A spa menu for men includes the Gentleman’s Exclusive Facial, waxing and the “Manli Cure” to keep hands and arms in perfect condition.

The current spa will close on June 1 for eight weeks of renovation. Treatments will still be available in a temporary spa in an interleading two bedroom suite during this period.

New faces and moving places for The Red Carnation Hotel Collection

The Red Carnation Hotels Collection has announced the appointment of two key staff to their South African sales team. Sally Gray takes up the reins as Sales Manager for the Red Carnation group. Sally will be based at The Oyster Box in Umhlanga, KZN and will be working closely with Nicole Smith who will be responsible for sales for the two sister properties in the group, The Twelve Apostles Hotel and Spa and Bushmans Kloof Wilderness Reserve and Wellness Retreat. Nicole will be based at The Twelve Apostles Hotel in Cape Town.

Sally has extensive experience in the hospitality and travel industries, having spent the past 20 years, in various capacities, working within the Thompsons Travel Group. Most recently she has held the position of General Manager: Global Sales for Thompsons Africa and brings a wealth of skill and experience to developing both the international and domestic travel markets on behalf of the RCH portfolio.

Nicole, who has been with The Red Carnation Group for the past nine years, brings both operational and sales experience to her new role. In May 2008 she was promoted to Guest Relation Manager of The Twelve Apostles Hotel, specifically looking after in a sales capacity the Key Consortia Relationships with large corporates such as Virtuoso and American Express, before becoming Assistant Sales and Marketing manager in 2009.

Twelve Apostles Chefs Bring Home Silver Medals at Culinary World Cup

Part of the international Red Carnation Hotel Collection, The Twelve Apostles Hotel and Spa’s Executive Chef and team Captain for the Culinary Team SA, Henrico Grobbelaar has proudly brought home three silver medals for South Africa from the Culinary World Cup at the 11th ‘Salon International de la Gastronomie’ (International Gastronomy Show) in Luxembourg. One was achieved in the cold table presentation and one for the hot kitchen category, along with another silver medal in the individual category for the pastry section by the Hotel’s Pastry Chef, Peter Gyorgyicsek.

The five star hotel in Cape Town, The Twelve Apostles Hotel and Spa, was the only property in South Africa, to have two of its Chefs compete on the Olympic Team.
