Music has an extraordinary power to bring communities together and work as a positive force to bring about change and inspire hope in people.

There are very few places on earth where the joys of music are appreciated more than in Cape Town.

Whether it is marimba, gospel or rock, Cape Town is always alive to the sounds of music and the locals' enthusiasm for it is infectious.

Just over a decade ago, the Cape Town Big Band Festival was established with the aim of supporting music education in big band jazz for school and college students.

As well as providing a stage for the country's bright young talent to perform on, the event was designed to help change the lives of young people in the city.

Proceeds are donated towards a scholarship at the South African College of Music and to the Beau Soleil Music for Africa Trust, along with various other musical projects across Cape Town.

The sounds may be provided by youngsters but the event is one for everybody to enjoy and a wonderful chance for those staying at the luxury Cape Town hotel the 12 Apostles to get a taste of South Africa's love for music.
