Araminta de Clermont exhibition in Cape Town

Event: Araminta de Clermont exhibition at the Joao Ferreira Gallery
Date: September 3rd to 27th 2008

A fascinating study of identity among one of South Africa's most distinctive social groups is running at the Joao Ferreira gallery in Cape Town this autumn.

Life After is a photographic exhibition examining the experiences of members of the South African Numbers Gangs. These individuals cover themselves in 'chappies' or tattoos while in prison as a demarcation of their status.

However, on the outside, the brandings can act to stigmatise them, keeping them on the fringes of society, according to the artist behind the images, Araminta de Clermont.

The subject matter has special resonances for the photographer - who too has endured a self-imposed marginalisation from society during a lengthy drug addiction.

De Clermont's commercial work has been published in a number of the UK's leading newspapers - much of which have been seen by British guests staying at luxury Cape Town hotel the Twelve Apostles.

Those on family breaks at the hotel can claim free tickets to the Aquarium at the Waterfront by taking up its Kids Fun in the Sun offer.
